What to measure with.

Every tracker claims to change your life. What actually matters is narrower: what it measures, whether that measurement is validated, what it really costs once the subscription is counted — and whether the data ends up somewhere you can use it.

Reference, not adviceConsumer devices estimate; they don’t diagnose. Prices are MSRP checked 2026-08-09 and move constantly. Nothing here replaces a clinician or a validated clinical measurement.

All devices, compared

“Year one” is hardware plus any mandatory subscription — the number that actually leaves your account.

DeviceMeasuresYear oneSyncsValidated?
Oura Ring 4Oura13 metricsSleep duration · REM sleep · Deep sleep …$421+ subscription✓ SyncsThe strongest evidence base in consumer sleep tracking — independent polysomnography comparisons show good agreement for total sleep time and reasonable stage agreement, well ahead of most wrist wearables.
WHOOPWHOOP10 metricsSleep duration · REM sleep · Deep sleep …$479+ subscription✓ SyncsReasonable agreement with polysomnography for total sleep time; stage-level accuracy is middling, as with all wrist devices.
Apple WatchApple18 metricsHeart rate · Resting heart rate · Walking heart-rate average …$399✓ SyncsThe ECG and AFib features are FDA-cleared and independently studied — genuinely clinical-grade for what they claim.

Hume Body PodHume4 metricsBody weight · Body fat percentage · Lean body mass …$299✓ SyncsMulti-frequency BIA correlates well with DEXA for tracking change, but absolute body-fat percentage can differ by several points.
Omron Upper-Arm Blood Pressure MonitorOmron3 metricsBlood pressure — systolic · Blood pressure — diastolic · Heart rate$75✓ SyncsClinically validated to recognised standards (AAMI/ESH-type protocols) and listed on independent validated-device registries.
Eight Sleep PodEight Sleep6 metricsSleep duration · REM sleep · Deep sleep …$2,853+ subscription✓ SyncsThermal regulation for sleep rests on good physiology — core temperature must fall for sleep onset and stay low through the night.
Home Sleep Apnea Test (WatchPAT / Lofta)Itamar / Lofta and others4 metricsBlood oxygen (SpO₂) · Respiratory rate · Resting heart rate …$189ManualHome sleep apnea testing is an accepted diagnostic pathway and correlates well with in-lab polysomnography for moderate-to-severe obstructive apnea.
Continuous Glucose Monitor (Stelo / Libre / Levels)Dexcom / Abbott / Levels1 metricsBlood glucose$99✓ SyncsCGMs are well validated against blood glucose, with a known lag of roughly 5–15 minutes behind capillary readings and lower accuracy in the hypoglycaemic range.
Fingertip Pulse OximeterVarious (Masimo, Nonin, Zacurate)2 metricsBlood oxygen (SpO₂) · Heart rate$35ManualWell-established technology, but published evidence shows pulse oximeters can overestimate oxygen saturation in people with darker skin, occasionally missing genuine hypoxaemia.

Smart rings

The best sleep-and-recovery form factor: worn all night without noticing, but a small sensor and no screen.

Watches & bands

Fewer sleep insights than a ring, far more on activity, ECG and safety features.

Body composition

Scales and pods that estimate fat, muscle and water. Useful for trends; none are lab-accurate.

Blood pressure & heart

The category where validation genuinely matters — an unvalidated cuff is worse than no cuff.

Sleep testing & environment

For diagnosing a problem rather than tracking one.

Glucose

Continuous glucose monitors, now available without a prescription.

Why sync matters. A device that writes into your health record puts its readings next to your bloods, your stack and your schedule — which is where a number stops being trivia and starts being useful.
