Estrone (E1)
Specialistalso —
What it isEstrone is a weaker estrogen produced primarily by aromatase in fat tissue. After menopause, when ovarian estradiol drops, estrone becomes the dominant circulating estrogen.
DoesProvides background estrogenic activity, particularly important in postmenopausal women.
GoodMid-range estrone signals balanced adipose estrogen production.
BadHigh estrone can drive endometrial hyperplasia and breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women with excess body fat. Very low estrone in postmenopause contributes to bone loss.
