Topical Magnesium (Oil / Lotion)

MuscleSleepCramps

Magnesium chloride applied to skin. Useful for cramps, post-workout muscles, and as a way to top up magnesium without GI side effects.

EvidenceLimited (transdermal absorption debated)

Strong subjective and clinical reports for muscle cramp relief, post-workout soreness, and pre-sleep calming. Rigorous absorption studies show smaller systemic effects than marketing implies — but the local muscle and skin effects are real. Effects: minutes to days.

Topical magnesium products (typically magnesium chloride in 'magnesium oil' — actually a saturated brine solution) deliver magnesium across the skin and via mucous membranes. Absorption is debated — some claim significant transdermal uptake; clinical trials are mixed. What's clear is that local application relieves muscle cramps and soreness reliably (whether via systemic absorption or local action). Useful for people who get GI side effects from oral magnesium, or as a layered approach to topping up tissue magnesium. Epsom salt baths work via the same principle.
