Topical Hyaluronic Acid

HydrationPlumping

A water magnet for skin. Pulls and holds moisture in the upper layers, giving immediate plumping and a softer look. Pairs with everything.

EvidenceStrong

Strong for skin hydration, smoothness, fine line softening (via hydration only — not a remodeling effect). Effects: immediate to weeks.

Topical hyaluronic acid is a humectant — it pulls water from the environment (and from deeper skin layers) into the upper epidermis where it produces hydration and visible plumping. Multi-molecular-weight HA formulations work at different skin depths simultaneously: high MW sits on the surface for immediate softness; low MW penetrates for longer-lasting hydration. In dry environments, HA can paradoxically pull water out of skin — always apply to damp skin and seal with a moisturiser. Not a long-term skin-changing active like retinol — it's an everyday hydration tool.

Where to buy

Curated pick
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
Topical HA is the most common skincare category — wide availability outside the priority brands. Cheap and effective topical HA alternatives: The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (~$8), Vichy Mineral 89, La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Serum. Apply to damp skin for best absorption.
