A keystone gut bacterium that maintains the mucus layer protecting your gut wall. Low levels predict obesity and diabetes; supplementation improves metabolic markers.
Strong epidemiological evidence (low Akkermansia tracks with obesity, T2D, IBD, frailty). First human RCT (Depommier et al.) showed metabolic improvements after 3 months. Mouse data is extensive. Effects: 8–12 weeks for metabolic markers.
Akkermansia muciniphila is a single species — but accounts for 3–5% of total gut bacteria in healthy adults and much less in obese, diabetic, and inflammatory-bowel populations. It feeds on the mucus layer of the gut, paradoxically keeping it healthy (it stimulates mucus production faster than it consumes it). Its outer membrane protein (Amuc_1100) signals through TLR2 to strengthen gut barrier function and reduce systemic inflammation. The first human RCT (Depommier et al., 2019) showed pasteurised A. muciniphila — heat-inactivated — improved insulin sensitivity, lipid markers, and reduced inflammation in overweight subjects. Pendulum was the first to commercialise viable A. muciniphila supplements.
