Spore-based probiotics use Bacillus species (B. coagulans, B. subtilis, B. clausii, B. licheniformis) that form heat-resistant, acid-resistant spores. They survive the stomach intact, germinate in the small intestine, do their work, and then sporulate again or pass through. This gives them three big practical advantages: shelf-stable at room temperature, robust survival to the gut, and (unlike many Lactobacillus strains) no histamine production — useful for histamine-sensitive individuals. Emerging evidence for SIBO, leaky gut, and immune modulation.

Bacillus coagulans (GanedenBC30, LactoSpore), Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus clausii (Enterogermina). Brands: MegaSporeBiotic, Just Thrive, Seed DS-01 (mixed).

1–3 billion CFU/day (lower than bacterial probiotics — spores are heartier).

Side effects
Generally well-tolerated. Mild GI symptoms (gas, bloating) in first 1–2 weeks. Some report a 'die-off' / herx reaction at higher doses.
Interactions
Antibiotics — separate by 2 hours (less critical than with non-spore probiotics). Otherwise clean.
Contraindications
Severe immune compromise (rare opportunistic infections reported). Central venous catheter. Critical illness.

Not standard. Symptom and GI tracking.
Food sources
B. subtilis and related species are present in fermented foods like natto, kimchi, and some traditional fermented vegetables. Hard to know which strains in which doses without lab testing.
