UC-II (Undenatured Type II Collagen)

Joints

A completely different mechanism from collagen peptides. Tiny daily doses (40 mg) of undenatured type II collagen retrain the immune system to stop attacking joint cartilage.

EvidenceModerate

Moderate for knee osteoarthritis — RCT (Lugo et al.) showed UC-II outperformed glucosamine + chondroitin on joint pain, stiffness, and function. Earlier rheumatoid arthritis work used higher doses with mixed results. Effects: 4–12 weeks.

UC-II is undenatured chicken sternal collagen type II at a tiny dose (40 mg/day). Unlike hydrolysed collagen peptides — which work as building blocks — UC-II works through oral tolerance. The intact type II collagen interacts with immune-tolerance cells in the gut (Peyer's patches), which then dampen the autoimmune attack that's often involved in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Comparative trials show UC-II outperforming the much-higher-dose glucosamine + chondroitin combo for knee osteoarthritis. Cheap on a per-dose basis, just 40 mg/day.

Form
UC-II (undenatured type II collagen) — standardised, patented. Look for the licensed UC-II ingredient on the label.
Dose
40 mg/day. That's it — higher doses don't help.
Timing
Empty stomach (60 min before food), once daily. PM common.
Schedule
Daily, ongoing.
Side effects
Generally very well-tolerated. Mild GI upset rare.
Interactions
Generally clean. Theoretical: immunosuppressants (UC-II modulates immune tolerance).
Contraindications
Chicken / poultry allergy. On immunosuppressants (relative). Active autoimmune flare (discuss with rheumatologist).
Lab markers
Not standard. Joint function (WOMAC) for OA.
Food sources
Type II collagen is concentrated in cartilage — chicken bones, chicken feet, chicken cartilage, bone broth. Cooking denatures it (which kills the UC-II mechanism but doesn't affect the supply of amino acids).

Pairs with

Hydrolysed collagen peptides (different mechanism — supplies building blocks). Omega-3, curcumin, boswellia (joint stack).
