Resistant Starch
Starch that resists digestion in the small intestine and ferments in the colon, producing butyrate — the primary fuel for your gut wall cells.
Strong for increasing colon butyrate production, improving insulin sensitivity (especially post-meal), gut barrier support, and microbiome diversity. Modest for satiety / weight management. Effects: 2–8 weeks.
Resistant starch (RS) is a class of carbohydrate that escapes digestion in the small intestine and reaches the colon intact, where bacteria ferment it into short-chain fatty acids (especially butyrate). Butyrate is the primary energy source for the cells lining your colon, supports gut barrier integrity, and has systemic effects on inflammation and insulin sensitivity. Four types exist; RS2 (in cooked-and-cooled potatoes, raw potato starch, green bananas) and RS3 (in cooked-and-cooled rice, oats) are the practical dietary sources. Supplementation often uses raw potato starch (Bob's Red Mill) at a few tablespoons per day.
- Form
- Raw potato starch (Bob's Red Mill — RS2, must not be heated above 60°C). Green banana flour. Acacia fibre. Resistant maltodextrin. Food sources: cooked-and-cooled potatoes / rice / pasta.
- Dose
- Start with 1 tsp/day and titrate up to 1–4 tablespoons (15–40 g) daily as tolerated.
- Timing
- With water, smoothies, or yogurt. Don't heat. Spread across the day at higher doses.
- Schedule
- Daily.
- Side effects
- Gas, bloating early on (the bacteria fermenting it produce gas). Titrate up slowly. Most people adapt over 1–2 weeks.
- Interactions
- Generally clean. Mild blood sugar effect — diabetics monitor.
- Contraindications
- SIBO (feeds wrong-place bacteria — can worsen). Active IBS-D in some. FODMAP-sensitive (worth testing tolerance).
- Lab markers
- Fasting glucose, HbA1c for metabolic tracking. Stool short-chain fatty acid testing in research.
- Food sources
- Cooked-and-cooled potatoes, cooked-and-cooled rice, green bananas, oats, lentils, cooked-and-cooled pasta. The 'cooled' part matters — heat / cool / heat actually increases RS content via starch retrogradation.
Pairs with
Probiotics (synbiotic — RS feeds them). Akkermansia, prebiotics (gut-microbiome stack).
