Beta-glucans are polysaccharides found in cell walls of cereals (oats, barley), yeast, and mushrooms. Different sources have different shapes and different effects. Yeast-derived (1,3/1,6 beta-glucan from Saccharomyces or Wellmune) is a potent immune-cell primer — binds receptors on macrophages and neutrophils, sharpening their pathogen response. Oat beta-glucan (1,3/1,4) lowers LDL cholesterol (FDA-approved health claim — 3 g/day). Form

Dose
Wellmune: 250–500 mg/day. Oat beta-glucan: 3 g/day for cholesterol.

Side effects
Generally very well-tolerated. Mild GI upset.
Interactions
Immunosuppressants — opposing (yeast beta-glucan especially).
Contraindications
Active autoimmune disease (relative — immune-stimulating). On immunosuppressants. Yeast allergy (for yeast-derived).

Food sources
Oats, barley, mushrooms, baker's yeast, seaweeds. Oatmeal at 1 cup delivers ~2 g beta-glucan — meaningful daily dose.
