AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound)
A concentrated, partially digested shiitake-mycelium extract. Strongest single-supplement evidence for HPV clearance and one of the better immune-modulating supplements with hospital use.
Strong for HPV clearance (MD Anderson Phase II trial — clearance rates above 60%). Strong as cancer-therapy adjunct in Japanese clinical use (improved quality of life, immune function, possibly survival). Moderate for general immune support and recurrent infections. Effects: 3–6 months for HPV.
AHCC is a proprietary cultured-mycelium extract developed in Japan in the 1980s — primarily from Lentinula edodes (shiitake) and related basidiomycete mushrooms. The extraction process partially digests the cell walls, yielding smaller, more bioavailable alpha-glucans alongside the standard mushroom beta-glucans. Used in over 1,000 hospitals in Japan as a cancer-therapy adjunct. The breakout English-language application: HPV clearance — Smith et al. at MD Anderson showed AHCC cleared high-risk persistent HPV infections in a majority of women across a 6-month course. Used widely for general immune support, cancer adjunct, and chronic viral infections.
- Form
- AHCC — proprietary trade name; multiple brands license the formulation (Quality of Life Labs, Kinoko, ImmPower).
- Dose
- 1–3 g/day for general immune use. 3 g/day for HPV clearance (the MD Anderson protocol).
- Timing
- Empty stomach for systemic immune effects (away from meals). AM common.
- Schedule
- Daily. HPV protocols run 6+ months.
- Side effects
- Generally well-tolerated. Mild GI upset, headache, fatigue at high doses initially.
- Interactions
- Immunosuppressants — opposing. Cytochrome P450 substrates — AHCC may alter some drug levels (limited but suggestive data).
- Contraindications
- Active autoimmune disease (immune-stimulating). On immunosuppressants. Organ transplant recipients. Severe mushroom allergy.
- Lab markers
- HPV testing (Pap + HPV co-testing) — track clearance every 3–6 months. Immune panels in clinical contexts.
- Food sources
- Not present as such in food — the active extraction is proprietary.
Pairs with
Vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D3 (immune stack). Other mushroom extracts (turkey tail especially, additive immune effect). NAC, glutathione for antioxidant support during cancer treatment.
