Training & the muscle myth

Resistance training is excellent for your body and your health. But the popular belief that it 'boosts your testosterone' is mostly wrong — and understanding why saves you from a lot of gym-floor mythology and the supplements sold on it.

The spike that does nothing

Real, brief, irrelevant

A hard resistance session does raise testosterone — by roughly 15–40% for 30–60 minutes, then it returns to baseline. The catch, established in careful within-subject studies, is that this transient spike does not build muscle and does not raise your resting testosterone. What predicts muscle growth is the muscle's own androgen-receptor content, not the post-workout hormone bump. Evidence ●●●●○

Baseline barely moves

Long-term training produces negligible change in resting testosterone in already-healthy men (meta-analyses put resistance-training's effect near zero). Where exercise does help testosterone, it's indirect — via fat loss and better insulin sensitivity — and mostly in men who start unfit or overweight and have room to improve.

Too much can lower it

Overtraining

At the other extreme, chronic very-high-volume endurance training can suppress resting testosterone — the 'exercise-hypogonadal male condition', with levels often ~30% below matched controls in heavily-trained endurance athletes. This affects men doing serious mileage for years, driven by low energy availability and elevated cortisol — not recreational exercisers or people doing moderate cardio. Evidence ●●●○○

Lift for the body, not the number

Strength training is worth doing for muscle, bone, insulin sensitivity, mood and healthspan — and, via fat loss, it helps testosterone indirectly. Just ignore the 'lift heavy to spike your T' framing: the spike is real, brief, and irrelevant to both muscle and your baseline.
