This is where the biohacker market lives. A couple of herbs have real if modest evidence, most are oversold, and one viral favourite carries a genuine safety flag with no human data behind it at all. Graded plainly, and attributed where the hype comes from.

Ashwagandha

The best of the bunch

Ashwagandha has the strongest case: several small randomised trials show a modest testosterone rise alongside genuine reductions in stress and cortisol and better sleep — which may be much of how it works. Effect sizes are modest and trial quality is limited, but as a stress-and-sleep adaptogen with a possible testosterone bump, it's the most defensible herb here. Evidence ●●●○○

Tongkat ali & fenugreek

Modest and mixed

Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) has some RCT support for modest gains, possibly by freeing testosterone from SHBG and easing stress. Fenugreek is genuinely mixed — it may help libido and free testosterone in some trials (partly via mild aromatase inhibition), with no effect in others. Both are 'maybe a little', not reliable levers. Evidence ●●○○○

Fadogia agrestis — the flag

No human data, a real safety signal

Fadogia agrestis went viral through the podcast/biohacker world (often stacked with tongkat ali) as a natural LH-mimic. The problem: there are no human trials at all — the evidence is animal-only, and rat studies show testicular toxicity at higher doses. It is a marketing-led supplement resting on rodent mechanism, not human outcomes, with an unresolved safety concern. Treat it as unproven and potentially harmful, not evidence-based. Evidence ●○○○○

Fadogia: unproven, with a testicular-toxicity signal

Popular does not mean safe or effective. Fadogia agrestis has never been tested in humans and has caused testicular damage in animals at higher doses. There's no basis to recommend it, and a real reason for caution — especially for anyone concerned about fertility.
