Total Bilirubin

What it isBilirubin is the orange-yellow pigment produced when red blood cells are broken down and hemoglobin is recycled. The liver conjugates it and excretes it into bile.

DoesFunctions as a potent antioxidant in circulation; gives bile and stool their color.

GoodA mid-range bilirubin provides antioxidant benefit without signaling pathology. Slightly elevated bilirubin (often Gilbert's syndrome) is associated with reduced cardiovascular and cancer risk.

BadVery high bilirubin signals liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or hemolysis. Very low bilirubin may indicate inflammation and depleted antioxidant capacity.

Standard
0.1–1.2 mg/dL.
Optimal
0.6–1.1 mg/dL (higher is good within range)
Modifiers
Rises with fasting, exercise, and Gilbert's syndrome (benign); rises with hemolysis or liver disease.

How to optimize

Diet
Adequate calories; avoid extreme fasting if Gilbert's; vegetables, polyphenols.
