Telomere Length
Specialistalso leukocyte telomere length, tl
What it isTelomeres are repetitive DNA sequences capping chromosome ends. They shorten with each cell division and with oxidative and inflammatory stress. Leukocyte telomere length is the most common clinical measure and is reported relative to age-matched norms.
DoesLimits replicative capacity of cells; short telomeres trigger cellular senescence and contribute to tissue aging.
GoodTelomere length above the age-adjusted mean reflects favorable cumulative cellular stress exposure and predicts modestly lower all-cause mortality.
BadSignificantly shortened telomeres for age associate with cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia, and earlier mortality, though the predictive value at the individual level is modest and the measurement has substantial variability.
How to optimize
- Lifestyle
- Aerobic exercise, weight management, sleep, stress reduction (meditation, yoga), avoiding smoking — all show modest associations with longer telomeres.
- Diet
- Mediterranean pattern, omega-3-rich foods, plant variety, adequate protein, limit processed meat and ultra-processed food.
- Supplements
- Omega-3 EPA+DHA 2–4 g/day, vitamin D3 if deficient, multivitamin, folate; weak evidence for astragalus-derived TA-65 and similar compounds.
- Peptides
- Epitalon (theoretically influences telomerase), Thymalin — early-stage evidence.
- Drugs
