Oxidized LDL (oxLDL)
Specialistalso oxldl
What it isA subset of LDL particles whose lipid and protein components have been chemically oxidized by reactive species. Once oxidized, LDL becomes a potent inflammatory trigger.
DoesOxidized LDL is taken up by macrophages in the vessel wall to form foam cells — the cellular kernel of atherosclerotic plaque.
GoodLow oxLDL suggests low oxidative burden and minimal active atherogenesis.
BadElevated oxLDL signals active plaque biology and predicts cardiovascular events independently of LDL-C.
How to optimize
- Lifestyle
- Quit smoking, Zone 2 cardio, weight loss; minimize fried foods and reused cooking oils.
- Diet
- Mediterranean pattern; cut seed oils and ultra-processed food; polyphenol-rich foods (berries, olive oil, dark leafy greens, green tea); avoid oxidized cooking oils.
- Supplements
- Mixed tocopherols (200 IU/day), vitamin C (500–1000mg/day), CoQ10 (100–200mg/day), curcumin (500mg 2×/day), polyphenols (resveratrol, quercetin).
- Peptides
- —
- Drugs
- Statins reduce oxLDL by lowering LDL particles available for oxidation.
