Methylated Arginines Panel (ADMA + SDMA)

Advanced wellness

also adma/sdma panel, methylarginines

What it isA combined assay of asymmetric and symmetric dimethylarginine, two methylated forms of arginine produced when methylated proteins are broken down. ADMA inhibits nitric oxide synthase; SDMA does not but reflects kidney.

DoesReports both endothelial nitric-oxide capacity (via ADMA) and early kidney (via SDMA) in a single panel.

GoodLow values across both reflect intact endothelial nitric oxide production and preserved kidney filtration.

BadElevated ADMA predicts endothelial dysfunction, cardiovascular events, and all-cause mortality. Elevated SDMA flags early kidney impairment before creatinine rises.

Standard
ADMA <0.7 µmol/L; SDMA <0.6 µmol/L (assay-dependent).
Optimal
ADMA <0.5 µmol/L, SDMA <0.5 µmol/L (lower is good)
Modifiers
Both rise with kidney impairment; ADMA elevated by oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and aging.

How to optimize

Lifestyle
Aerobic exercise, weight management, smoking cessation, blood pressure control.
Diet
Mediterranean pattern; nitrate-rich vegetables (beets, leafy greens) support nitric oxide pathway; cut ultra-processed food.
Supplements
L-citrulline 3–6 g/day, beetroot extract, omega-3 EPA+DHA, folate, B12, vitamin C, vitamin D3 if deficient.
Peptides
BPC-157 (vascular and endothelial repair).
Drugs
Statins, ACE inhibitors, and ARBs modestly lower ADMA; blood-pressure control reduces SDMA elevation in kidney disease.
