Zeolite (Clinoptilolite)
A microporous mineral with a cage-like structure that binds heavy metals and ammonia. Marketed heavily for detox; evidence is limited.
Moderate for heavy metal binding (small RCTs). Limited for general 'detox' claims. Effects: 30+ days.
Zeolites are aluminosilicate minerals with a microporous cage structure that selectively binds certain ions. Clinoptilolite is the specific zeolite used in human supplementation. Its strongest evidence is for binding ammonia (used in hepatic encephalopathy research), heavy metals (lead, mercury), and reducing gut permeability. Modern wellness marketing has run far ahead of the clinical evidence — claims of binding 'all toxins' are overstated. Quality is critical: choose micronised, particle-size-tested products from reputable suppliers.
- Form
- Micronised activated clinoptilolite zeolite (powder, liquid, or capsules). Reputable brands include ZeoBoost, Pure Body.
- Dose
- Per product instructions — typically 1–3 g powder daily or 10–30 drops of liquid 1–3x daily.
- Timing
- Away from food, medications, and supplements (separate by 2 hours).
- Schedule
- 30–90 day protocols. Not for indefinite use.
- Side effects
- Generally well-tolerated. Constipation. Trace aluminium release — choose well-processed products.
- Interactions
- Binds oral medications — separate by 2+ hours. May reduce mineral absorption with chronic use.
- Contraindications
- Bowel obstruction. With critical oral medications. Pregnancy (limited safety data).
- Lab markers
- Heavy metal panels (urine, hair, stool) for chelation tracking.
- Food sources
- Not in everyday food.
Pairs with
Activated charcoal, bentonite (binder rotation). Chlorella (heavy metal protocols).
