Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)

ImmuneCancer adjunctGut

The most rigorously studied mushroom for cancer adjunct treatment. Active compounds (PSK, PSP) are licensed cancer adjuncts in Japan.

EvidenceStrong (cancer adjunct in Japan)

Strong evidence for PSK extending survival in gastric and colorectal cancer when added to chemotherapy (Japanese RCTs and meta-analyses). Moderate for general immune support, post-antibiotic gut recovery, and prebiotic effects on the microbiome. Effects: 4–12 weeks for immune / gut.

Turkey tail is a common bracket fungus with striped concentric markings (hence the name). Its two main bioactive polysaccharide-protein complexes — PSK (polysaccharide-K, marketed as Krestin) and PSP (polysaccharide peptide) — are licensed prescription cancer adjuncts in Japan, where PSK is used alongside chemotherapy for gastric and colorectal cancer with documented survival benefits. Outside the cancer-adjunct space, turkey tail supports immune modulation broadly, gut microbiome diversity, and post-illness recovery. The evidence base is among the strongest of any functional mushroom.

Form
Dual-extract from fruiting body, ideally standardised to beta-glucan content. PSK / PSP-enriched products for stronger immune effect. Avoid mycelium-on-grain without verified actives.
Dose
1,000–3,000 mg/day of fruiting body extract. PSK in Japanese clinical use: 3 g/day.
Timing
Anytime with food.
Schedule
Daily.
Side effects
Generally well-tolerated. Mild GI upset (gas, bloating), darkened stools, occasional headache.
Interactions
Immunosuppressants — turkey tail is immune-stimulating; opposes intended drug effect. Chemotherapy — generally synergistic in trials, but discuss with oncology before adding.
Contraindications
Mushroom allergy. On immunosuppressants after organ transplant or for autoimmune disease (without provider input).
Lab markers
Not standard. CBC, immune panels in research / clinical contexts.
Food sources
Turkey tail itself is too tough and woody to eat as food — traditionally consumed as a long-simmered decoction / tea.

Pairs with

Other functional mushrooms (reishi, lion's mane, cordyceps — synergistic blend). Vitamin D3, zinc, vitamin C (immune stack). Probiotics (turkey tail acts as a prebiotic — synergistic gut effects).
