Gymnema sylvestre

Blood sugarSugar cravings

The 'sugar destroyer.' Chewed before eating, it temporarily blocks the ability to taste sweetness — useful for breaking sugar habits. Also genuinely supports blood sugar control.

EvidenceModerate

Moderate for HbA1c reduction in type 2 diabetes, reduced sugar cravings, blood sugar control. Effects: 4–12 weeks.

Gymnema sylvestre is an Ayurvedic vine whose gymnemic acids bind sweet-taste receptors on the tongue, temporarily abolishing the taste of sugar (try chewing the leaf, then biting chocolate — it tastes like wax). Beyond the party-trick effect, it supports blood sugar control via multiple mechanisms — improved insulin sensitivity, reduced glucose absorption from gut, possibly some pancreatic beta-cell support. Useful adjunct in pre-diabetes and sugar-craving protocols. Take just before meals.
