Chlorella is a true green microalga whose tough cellulose cell wall binds to heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminium) and certain organic toxins in the gut, helping them pass out with stool rather than being reabsorbed. Particularly useful after mercury exposure (amalgam removal, fish consumption), heavy-metal chelation protocols, and as ongoing low-level support in modern toxin-rich environments. Also a complete protein source, B-vitamin source (some B12 — debated bioavailability), and immune modulator. The cell wall has to be cracked/broken for digestibility — look for 'cracked-wall' or 'broken-cell-wall' products.

Form
Cracked-cell-wall chlorella (Chlorella vulgaris or pyrenoidosa) from clean-water cultivation (Korean / Japanese / Taiwanese sources). Third-party tested for heavy metals (yes, the chelator can itself be contaminated if grown poorly).
Dose
3–8 g/day. Higher doses during active chelation protocols.
Timing
Empty stomach or with light meals — to maximise binding of any metals being mobilised. AM common.
Schedule
Daily during chelation. Ongoing low-dose for general use.
Side effects
GI upset (especially first week), green stool (harmless), photosensitivity rare. 'Detox' reactions if mobilising metals faster than excreting.
Interactions
Warfarin — chlorella is high in vitamin K; can reduce warfarin's efficacy. Immunosuppressants — opposing.
Contraindications
On warfarin. Iodine sensitivity. Algae allergy. Autoimmune disease (relative).
Lab markers
Urine and stool heavy metals (provoked or unprovoked) for chelation monitoring. Hair mineral analysis. PT/INR if on warfarin.
Food sources
Chlorella IS food — common in Japanese and Korean diets. Powder, tablets, or fresh in smoothies.

Cilantro (mobilises metals from deep tissue — chlorella binds them in gut; classic Klinghardt protocol). NAC, glutathione, alpha-lipoic acid (Phase II support during chelation). Selenium (mercury antagonist).
