Activated charcoal is carbon treated with oxygen at high temperature to create a porous structure with massive surface area (one teaspoon has the surface area of a football field). It binds toxins, drugs, and gas molecules in the gut, preventing absorption. The clinical use in acute drug overdose / poisoning is well-established — ERs give 25–100 g of activated charcoal slurry. Supplemental uses (bloating, hangover prevention, general 'detox') are more modest. Critical interaction caveat: activated charcoal binds and blocks absorption of nearly all oral medications and many nutrients — separate by 2+ hours.

Form: Coconut shell-derived activated charcoal capsules or powder. Avoid hardwood-sourced (residue concerns).
Dose: 500–2,000 mg as needed. Acute toxin exposure: 25–100 g (hospital).
Timing: Away from all meals, medications, and supplements — 2 hours apart minimum.
Schedule: As-needed (gas, bloating, occasional detox). Not for daily long-term use (nutrient depletion).
Side effects: Black stool (harmless). Constipation. Tongue / dental staining if not encapsulated. Nutrient depletion with chronic use.
Interactions: Reduces absorption of nearly all oral medications and many nutrients. Separate by 2+ hours. Especially: birth control pills, antidepressants, thyroid medication, prescription cardiac drugs.
Contraindications: Active GI bleeding. Bowel obstruction. With any medication you need to actually work (separate timing).
Lab markers: Not standard.
Food sources: Not food. Don't confuse with food-grade charcoal in ice cream / breads — much lower binding capacity.

Pairs with

Bentonite clay, zeolite (other binders — alternated). Generally taken alone (binds other supplements).
