Retraining therapy & counselling

Before the fancy devices, the humble pairing of good education and everyday sound has its own formal program — Tinnitus Retraining Therapy — and simply understanding the condition turns out to be therapeutic in its own right.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

Counselling + sound

TRT pairs directive counselling (teaching the brain that the sound is neutral, not a threat) with all-day low-level sound to drive habituation. It helps many people — though trials suggest much of the benefit comes from the education and structured sound rather than any special proprietary protocol, and it asks for months of consistency to work. Education is treatment

Understanding helps

Simply learning what tinnitus is — that it's common, usually benign, and that habituation is the normal course — measurably lowers distress. It's why one good session with a knowledgeable clinician, or a careful guide, is itself a real intervention: it defuses the threat that powers the loop. Reassurance, done properly, is medicine here. Consistency beats gadgets

Good counselling and steady background sound do most of the work of the branded programs. What matters is doing it consistently over months — not which device or app has the slickest marketing.
