The honest truth: no cure, real help

Let's be straight before the toolkit: there is no pill or procedure that reliably erases tinnitus, and anyone promising a cure is selling something. But the distress — the part that actually wrecks quality of life — is very treatable. Almost everyone can get to 'I barely notice it most of the time.'

What treatment realistically means

Defuse, don't erase

The honest target is habituation and reduced suffering: the sound recedes into the background and stops hijacking your attention, sleep, and mood. The treatments that work show large drops in distress scores (THI/TFI) with little or no change in measured loudness — and that is a genuine win, because distress, not decibels, is what ruins lives. Set that as the goal and the whole field makes sense.

Beware the cure sellers

The red flag

No drug or supplement is approved to cure tinnitus. 'Clinically proven' direct-to-consumer pills, secret herbal formulas, and one-session miracle devices exploit desperate people — the more confident the cure claim, the less you should trust it. Real help is unglamorous: correct the hearing, add sound, retrain the response. Keep that filter on for everything that follows.

Judge everything by the distress score

The measure of a good tinnitus treatment is a fall in distress and impact (THI/TFI), not silence. Anything below should be judged by whether it helps you live well with the sound — not by a promise to switch it off.
