The distress loop
- Attention + emotion
In Jastreboff's neurophysiological model, the auditory signal only becomes suffering when the brain's limbic (emotion) and autonomic (fight-or-flight) systems tag it as a threat. Fear and attention amplify it; constantly monitoring it makes it louder; catastrophic thinking ('this will never stop, it will ruin my life') deepens the distress and locks in the loop. The sound and the suffering are two different things. Evidence ●●●●○
