What it isA pituitary hormone primarily known for milk production in women but present and active in men too.

DoesSuppresses gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which lowers LH/FSH and therefore testosterone. Also influences libido, refractory period after orgasm, and immune.

GoodA mid-low prolactin signals an unobstructed gonadal axis and intact libido.

BadElevated prolactin in men suppresses testosterone, causes erectile dysfunction, low libido, and possibly gynecomastia. Very high levels suggest a pituitary tumor (prolactinoma).
