What it isA ubiquitous metal with no biological role. Exposure comes from antiperspirants, antacids, processed food additives, certain cookware, and historically from dialysis water. Healthy kidneys excrete it; chronic kidney disease impairs clearance.
DoesAt elevated levels, deposits in bone and brain where it interferes with neuronal and osteoblast.
GoodLow plasma aluminum protects bone, nervous system, and red blood cell formation, particularly in kidney disease.
BadAccumulated aluminum causes dialysis-associated dementia, osteomalacia, and microcytic anemia. Routine exposure in healthy people is not strongly linked to dementia despite popular concern, but high levels in dialysis or premature infants are clearly harmful.
